None of the apartments on this 12-deck wonder are for rent. Every one of the 165 luxurious apartments on board, which range in price from $3 million for a studio to $15 million for a three-bedroom pad, is owned by inhabitants who must have a net worth of $10 million. There's also a house that costs $50 million.
You can see why these ships are called "worlds" beyond price tags. The World, its sister ship the Universe, and their competitors all offer luxury living at a high level. Each vessel has several restaurants where you can eat ocean food (the menus vary by restaurant but usually include lobster, caviar, and other delights), bars, lounges, spas, basketball courts, golf courses, and more. Some even have their own islands with beaches and resorts.

The most costly cruise ships are expected to cost more than $1 billion in US dollars to build. A cruise ship with a passenger capacity of 500 is anticipated to cost $550 million, while those holding 2000–3000 passengers are estimated to cost close to a billion dollars.
These estimates do not include operational costs which are significant for large vessels. For example, the annual operating cost of a cruise ship is about 20% of its value.
Cruise ships are constructed for maximum durability. They have been referred to as "brick boats", due to their use of considerable amounts of steel and other heavy materials for their construction. Modern cruise ships can be built within a year, although earlier models could take up to three years to complete.
An average-sized cruise ship can be used for several years without any major refurbishments. However, some ships have been known to operate for over 10 years before they are rebuilt or replaced. These days, many ships are also being designed with sustainability in mind, using energy-efficient technologies and organic food options for their restaurants.
The amount people pay for their cruise depends on how expensive a cabin will be, whether or not they purchase drinks, meals, etc., and what type of cruise it is. Prices vary depending on where in the world you are traveling from.
If you want to pay in cash or traveler's checks, the suggested deposit for a 7-night trip is US $300 per person; US $150 per person for cruises up to 6 nights; and US $450 per person for cruises of 8 nights or longer upon check-in (subject to change).
The amount you must bring depends on the type of card you use. If you are using a charge card, it is recommended that you add 15% of your billable amount to your deposit. This will provide you with a little extra money if something happens to your luggage. If you do not have enough money on your credit card, you will be charged a fee.
If you are paying with a debit card or cash, the required deposit is usually the full cost of your cruise plus tax. However, many cruise lines will waive the deposit if you pay by credit card.
The amount required for a bank deposit may change depending on how long you plan to stay at each port. For example, if you plan to visit several ports and take day trips outside of Oslo, Norway, then you should bring more money than if you were visiting just one port for two days.
Most passengers spend every penny they have during their cruise. In fact, most people need to book a second cruise within months of their first voyage to pay off their debt. But if you plan ahead, you can save some money.
The cruise ship includes six distinct types of rooms and mini-suites in over 30 categories, including spa, balcony, oceanview, interior, and studio. In addition, The Haven on the ship features seven different types of suites and villas. There is undoubtedly a stateroom to suit every taste and budget.
There are two types of inside rooms on board a cruise ship: single/double and quiet/not-so-quiet. Single/double rooms can be found on most ships up to about 900 people. They are usually between 180 and 300 square feet (17 m² and 0.5 m²) in size. A few large ships also have triple-occupancy rooms of this size. Quiet rooms are completely soundproof and will not disturb other guests or crew members working away from the noise of the elevator or activity center. Noise levels in these rooms should be less than 55 decibels when measured with a decibel meter. Not-so-quiet rooms are exactly what they sound like - they are not quiet at all! These rooms may have some noise pollution from time to time, but because they are near an elevator or activity center they are still considered good quality sleep.
Balcony rooms are larger than inside rooms and have a balcony. Most balconies are outside the room and provide beautiful views of the sea. Oceanview rooms are similar to balcony rooms except that they offer views of both sea and sky.
The Disney Dream, a 130,000-ton ocean liner with 4,000 passenger capacity, is the first of two new cruise ships being built by Disney at a cost of more than $1.8 billion. It's due to be delivered in December 2011 and will set sail from Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida.
The second ship, the Disney Fantasy, which will carry 3,500 passengers, is expected to enter service in May 2012. The two ships will form the heart of Disney Cruise Line, a new division of The Walt Disney Company that will deliver innovative vacations at affordable prices.
Both ships will feature state-of-the-art technology and entertainment options for their guests. They will also be environmentally friendly, using less energy than other vessels of their size. And they will be designed to capture and recycle most of their waste water.
In addition to offering family-friendly cruises around the Caribbean and Mexico, Disney Cruise Line plans to expand its fleet to include European destinations as well as transatlantic flights between Florida and Europe.
The dream features three swimming pools, one large theater, a spa, a basketball court, a rock wall, and a mini golf course. It can accommodate up to 4,000 passengers and sails to the Caribbean and Mexico from Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral in Florida.
After deducting overhead costs, a ship will earn around $291 in net profit per passenger, every voyage. That implies that, at full capacity, a single ship, such as Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, could generate $9.8 million in revenue ($1.7 million of which is profit) over a single 7-day voyage. However, since most ships operate at less than 100% capacity, the actual profit margin is usually lower.
The cost to run a cruise ship is very high: about $150 million per year for expenses such as fuel and food, not including staff costs or other operating expenses. Thus, even with three decks of entertainment facilities, a cruise ship is still considered a luxury product because it does not generate enough income to cover its operating costs.
There are two ways for a cruise line to increase profits: raise prices or sell more tickets. Since most passengers do not want to pay more money for a cruise, most lines try to attract more customers by offering special deals or promotions. For example, Royal Caribbean offers "favorites packages" on some ships where they give away free drinks, snacks, and activities every day at a set time. This helps attract people who would otherwise not take a cruise because of the price tag.
A few lines have also tried going downmarket, by selling cruises at low rates during off-season periods or when capacity is not needed at full speed.
