Fare refunds are available upon submission of the original PRS counter ticket from any Indian Railways PRS counter up to 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure time in the case of confirmed tickets and up to thirty minutes before the train's scheduled departure time in the case of RAC/waitlisted tickets. Tickets that have been issued in error or are cancelled cannot be refunded.
Tickets that have been purchased at a discount can only be refunded if they were not used. If you cancel your ticket after it has been issued but prior to its expiry date, then you will not be able to obtain a refund for that ticket.
Refunds can only be done online through the IRCTC website. To obtain a refund, you must first log into your IRCTC account by entering your username and password. Once logged in, click on the Refunds link. Select the ticket category and enter the required details. Your refund will be processed within 24 hours of receipt of the request.
If a RAC or waitlisted ticket is presented for cancellation, the fare is refunded after deducting the clerkage charge of Rs 60 per passenger plus GST if the ticket is presented for cancellation up to thirty minutes before the train's scheduled departure time, regardless of the distance specified by IRCTC. If the cancellation occurs more than thirty minutes before the train's scheduled departure time, then no refund will be made for the ticket.
After this period, any further cancellations result in the loss of the ticket value. For example, if a ticket on the Rajdhani Express costs Rs 10,000 and is cancelled four days before its departure date, then only Rs 7,500 will be refunded to the credit card used to make the booking. The remaining Rs 2,500 will be lost.
Similarly, if a ticket on the same train is cancelled after the confirmation date but before the departure date, then only the price minus the cancellation fee is refunded. For example, if a ticket on the same train costs Rs 15,000 and is cancelled after it has been booked but before the departure date, then only Rs 12,500 will be refunded to the credit card used to make the booking.
If the ticket is cancelled after the departure date but before boarding, then no refund will be made.
Waiting list tickets can also be cancelled up to the time of reservation.
Cancellation fees for unreserved, RAC, and waitlisted tickets are Rs 30 for unreserved (second class) and Rs 60 for second class (reserved) and other classes. However, the ticket can only be canceled if the train is canceled. In such circumstances, the PRS system will provide a refund. 2. Unused reserved seats cannot be released to others; instead they go to the reserve pool for future use.
For example, if you have an unreserved ticket on the WR line and decide not to travel, then the reservation for that seat would still remain active even after your departure date has passed. The PRS system will provide a refund for this kind of unused reservation.
Similarly, if you have a waitlisted ticket but the train does not run due to some reason, then the reservation for that place would also get cancelled automatically. You would then need to repick another place in the same class in the same station as per original reservation pattern.
However, if the waitlist ticket gets confirmed later when more places become available, then you would need to claim this new reservation too. Your previous waitlisted reservation would get deleted from the system after claiming the new one.
Waiting list tickets get created at the time of booking based on demand and availability of seats.
Technically, a customer can cancel her/his RAC ticket up to 30 minutes before the train's planned departure time. After the specified departure time, refunds are not permitted. * If the reservation charts have been created for an e-Ticket (confirmed or RAC), an online TDR is required to collect the refund. The online TDR must be completed within 180 days of booking your ride.
However, most riders do not know this fact and assume that if they miss their ride, it's gone forever - especially since RAC tickets cannot be changed or cancelled after the scheduled departure time has passed.
In reality, though, you can simply find another way to get to your destination on time. Many riders will switch out with friends or family members who are going in the same direction so that there are enough seats together in one direction for a RAC to be needed. If you cannot find anyone else going your direction, call a taxi or use Uber to get to your destination on time.
The only real penalty for cancelling your RAC ticket is that you will not be able to use the ticket again. However, since RAC tickets are not required for e-Tickets or paper tickets, this does not affect many riders.
The staff at Amtrak will not give refunds for missed rides.
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 48 hours before the train's planned departure, a flat cancellation fee of Rs.240/- for AC First Class/Executive Class, Rs.160/- for Second Class and Rs.100/- for Third Class will be charged.
Ticket cancellations within 48 hours of the scheduled departure time require a fee of Rs.400 for AC First Class/Executive Class, Rs.300 for Second Class and Rs.200 for Third Class.
Cancellations made after the scheduled departure time are subject to a full refund less a service charge of 10%.
The refund amount will be credited to the original form of identification used at time of purchase with no other form of identification accepted. The credit cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer except those similar to this one.
Refunds can only be claimed at the station where the ticket was purchased from and must be done so with the help of a travel agent or courier service. For example, Indian Railways' own website cannot be used to claim refunds.
Please note that tickets can also be refunded via the IRCTC website but only up to 50 days prior to the date of travel. After this period has elapsed, the ticket becomes non-refundable.
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled up to 48 hours before the train's scheduled departure, cancellation charges of Rs 240 for AC First Class/Executive Class, Rs 200 for AC 2 Tier/First Class, Rs 180 for AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy, Rs 120 for Sleeper Class, and Rs 60 for Second Class will be deducted.
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled within 48 hours of the train's scheduled departure time, it will not be possible to obtain a refund for the cost of the ticket.
However, you can transfer your reservation to another train of the same class within 14 days of making the original booking. The new travel date must be within 12 months of the first date of the ticket. This process will be applicable only once in case of multiple transactions under one account. Any further changes made beyond this period will be treated as new bookings and subject to the normal terms and conditions applied by Indian Railways.
Please note that cancellations are only effective if done directly with Indian Railways or its agents. If you have booked your ticket through an agent, then they have the right to retain the payment regardless of whether you end up using the ticket. In such cases, it is advisable to contact the agent directly to find out what his policy is on refunds if you decide not to travel.
Indian Railways offers a refundable security deposit of Rs 10,000 for all confirmed tickets.
