Megabus started in 2009 when young French entrepreneurs decided to use their knowledge of how buses are run in France to create a new way for people to travel around Montreal, Canada. The concept was very simple: people would be able to buy tickets online for fares that were by far lower than what other companies were charging. In addition, the buses themselves were all less than 10 years old and ran on natural gas instead of diesel fuel. This allowed Megabus to offer prices so low that even students could afford to ride them. Within just a few months, this new company had become the second-largest bus line in Quebec after Incarnek.
In 2010, Megabus opened service to Toronto, Ontario, and within a few months had become the largest bus line in Canada. By 2013, they operated routes in eight provinces and three territories across Canada and the United States. They also have services to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
