Do you have to submit a certified copy of your passport?

You do not need to present any other documentation to show your "foreign status" or "identify" if you produce an original, valid passport (or a certified copy of a valid passport). Otherwise, at least two of the papers specified in the chart below must be submitted.

The following documents are acceptable as proof of foreign status: a birth certificate, citizenship document (such as a Canadian passport), immigration document (such as a work permit), refugee card, or travel document such as a visa or entry stamp. If none of these documents is available, you can also provide a letter from your employer or school stating that they know of your foreign status.

An affidavit signed by a notary public or consulate official will serve as proof of foreign status if it is accompanied by a copy of your passport. This affidavit should state that you are a citizen of another country and that you have provided proof of this fact. An affidavit is any statement made under oath, before a notary public or other officer authorized to administer oaths. The affidavit must be attached to a form application for a new Canadian passport.

If you cannot prove your foreign status, you will not be allowed to enter Canada. You will be asked to leave the country by any border agent who believes that you may not be a foreign national.

People often assume that since they already have a driver's license they don't need to get a passport.

What proof do you need for a passport?

All passport applicants must include proof of identification. Existing passports, naturalization certificates, driver's licenses, military ID cards, and other current government-issued ID are all acceptable forms of identity. The passport application must be accompanied by a photocopy of the identifying documents. Photographs are not required but are highly recommended.

Passport photographs should be clear, well-lit, and taken at a distance so that facial features are clearly discernible. Be sure to wear neutral clothing and avoid wearing jewelry or hats. Passports cannot be renewed if the photograph is missing, has been tampered with, or is unsuitable for identification purposes.

If you lack the required documentation, you will not be able to obtain a passport. However, before your application is rejected, we recommend that you try to find evidence that can verify your identity. These items may be requested from you when you apply for a new passport card: a current utility bill, bank statement, phone bill, train ticket, or airplane ticket in your name. You will also need to provide two photos of yourself.

The first time you apply for a new passport, you will be required to visit an embassy or consulate office. It is important to remember the appointment date as it may affect which office can process your application first.

Do you need a photocopy of your passport?

To obtain a U.S. passport, you must provide proof of citizenship as well as proof of identification. All of these documents must be originals or certified copies. You must provide the original document as well as a photocopy. Many folks forget to bring their photocopies and must return. If this happens to you, contact the Department of State by phone at 877-PAGENO (877-739-2767) and ask for the Passport Acceptance Unit.

The process takes about four weeks. In the meantime, if you need to travel with your passport, you can leave it with someone who is not going to be able to use it themselves (for example, an embassy employee), or you can get an emergency passport. There are more details about this on the next page.

People sometimes think that because they have a certified copy of their birth certificate they don't need to bring their birth certificate with them when they apply for a new passport. This is not true. If you cannot provide your original birth certificate, then you will not be able to obtain a new passport document with just a copy.

The last thing people notice about their passports is the expiration date. You should make sure that if your passport expires before your current one does, to let the department know so that enough time can be added to your schedule.

What documents do you need to renew your passport?

When applying for a passport renewal, you must provide evidence of identification. A prior, undamaged U.S. passport; a driver's license; a government or military ID; or a naturalization certificate are all acceptable papers. In addition, you will need the following information:

Your name and address for the record. If there is no change in your name or address, write "no change" here.

The date of issue for your new passport. You can use your current passport's date of expiration as well but it is not required.

A money order or check for payment of the application fee. The amount of the fee is $110.

An original photo page from an existing passport. You will need to bring two photos that show a side view and front view of your face. Men should bring a photo with their birth hair color as well. Women should bring either their birth or current hair color. Make sure to choose photos that are at least five years old and not include any writing, numbers, or logos. Original prints are required rather than copies because copies don't have the electronic chip that prevents fraud.
