Renew your subscription to get a new picture. But here's the good news: you may replace your passport by renewing it at any time after you receive it. Renewal also necessitates the acquisition of a new passport photograph. To renew your passport, use form DS-82. You don't even have to return to the passport acceptance center and stand in line again.
In addition to renewal, other reasons for obtaining a new photograph include changing hair color or style, wearing glasses or a hat, etc. The pass port office will be able to help you if you need additional information.
The cost of a new passport photo is $110 ($85 for children under 16). If you are receiving assistance from a government agency, they may be able to provide you with an application for free or reduced-cost photos. Contact them first to see if they can help out. Otherwise, you can always go ahead and pay for your own photo.
It is important to wear clean, dark-colored clothing for your photo. Wearing white or light colors will make your face appear lighter than it is supposed to be. Also, make sure that your skin is properly exposed. You do not want anything covering up your face when your image is being taken.
Make sure to bring two forms of identification when you go to the passport office - either a driver's license or state ID card. They will need to see proof of who you are in order to process your application quickly and easily.
You cannot just update the photo on your passport. It is only possible to update it by applying for a renewal. You can do this at any time, but the remaining validity in your current passport will be lost.
If you are eligible to renew your passport using Form DS-82, you may arrange for a third party to submit your passport, Form DS-82, and photo, as well as pay the requisite price, at the consular section cashier. Payment is only accepted by appointment and must be presented at the time of service. Cash payments are accepted.
The Brazilian consulate will not accept mail or fax orders for passport renewal. To arrange for renewal of your passport, contact the American Embassy in Brasília at (61) 3202-6000 or visit their website at http://brasilia.usembassy.gov/.
Renewal fees include the cost of processing your application, which includes security reviews and other administrative steps required by law before your passport can be renewed. Fees for passport renewal services vary depending on where you apply. The fee for an emergency passport is $125 and standard passports cost $160. Fees may also be paid through credit card; check with your bank to see if they charge a transaction fee for these services.
For information on what documents are required during passport renewal, see https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/renewal/what-documents-required.html.
The new passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the expiration date of the old passport. If you cannot produce evidence of having renewed your passport within the allotted time, then it becomes necessary to cancel it.
Adult Passport Renewal
You must renew your passport at a U.S. embassy or consulate if you live in another nation. Please visit Applying for a U.S. Passport from Outside the U.S. for more information. 1. Fill out Form DS-82. Based on the information you enter, the Form Filler will choose the appropriate form for you. 2. Pay the required fee. 3. Wait up to six weeks for your new passport to be mailed to the address on file.
If you are unable to go to a consulate office with an Embassy courier service, there is also an application process that can be done by mail. You will need to send in a paper copy of your entire passport profile, including photo pages, and a U.S. $100 cash deposit (via money order or bank check) that will be returned upon delivery of your new passport. For more information about this option, please contact the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs at 800-407-4747.
Your passport is your identity card; it allows you to travel abroad and back again without having to show any other documents. If you lose your passport, make sure you report it immediately to the nearest American embassy or consulate. They will be able to issue you a new one within just a few days.
When renewing your passport, you must submit your previous passport together with the other supporting papers for processing. Your old passport will be marked "cancelled" and returned to you alongside the new one. If your old passport is lost or destroyed, you will need to provide evidence of identity theft or a lost or stolen document to have your name removed from the Passport Index.
In some cases, if there is no evidence of identity theft and you can provide proof of a lost or stolen document, the Department of State may issue you with a new passport. You must include a copy of the crime report with your application in order to qualify for this option.
If you are unable to provide evidence of identity theft or a lost or stolen document, we will be unable to remove your name from the Passport Index and your new passport will not be able to be issued.
The only way to be granted a renewal without having your name placed on the Passport Index is if you can prove that you were denied a previous attempt to renew your passport because of missing information or a failed identity check. If this is the case, then you will need to complete a New Application for a Passport form. This form requires an additional $110 fee.
The old passport page with the "cancelled" label must be retained by the applicant.
Post offices are not required to assess or process your passport renewal application if you use Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82. You can send your renewal application to the State Department by mail. Adult passports are valid for ten years and can be renewed through the mail. Passports for minors cannot be renewed via mail. They must be processed in person at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
In addition to Post Office boxes, only certain addresses on record with the State Department can be used on form DS-82. These include official address records maintained by U.S. embassies and consulates abroad, as well as state departments and agencies. Private companies that provide directory assistance information about people's names and addresses also maintain these files. They may charge for this service.
If you wish, you can also write yourself a note explaining why you are renewing your passport and including any special travel plans. This note is called an "expedited passport report." The State Department says these reports help it "identify travelers who might be in danger because of changes in government policy, military activity, or other events affecting their security."
The cost of a passport includes shipping and handling charges. If you want your passport mailed to an alternate address, add another $100 to the cost. For example, if you want your passport sent to both your home and work addresses, the total cost is $110.
