Unfortunately, no ferry routes connect the United States to the Yucatan Peninsula. There was a ferry service that ran from Florida to Cancun, but it was stopped owing to operational and navigational issues.
There are two types of transportation between cities in Mexico and the United States: domestic flights and cross-border buses. Both have their advantages and disadvantages; for example, domestic flights are cheaper but they don't reach as far or carry as much cargo as the buses. It's usually best to check which option is best for your situation before traveling to either country.
If you want to see some beautiful beaches and Mayan ruins while traveling on American money, then a trip to the Yucatan Peninsula is perfect for you. The journey there takes about five hours by car.
You can only enter the United States through a border station. These stations are usually located at airports but they can also be found near major ports and borders. At these stations, an immigration officer will ask you some questions regarding your trip and issue you a visa if needed. Visas are not required by law for citizens of the United States, so if you're not asked for one when you enter the country then you don't need one to stay.
Domestic flights within the Yucatan Peninsula use small airplanes that require short runways.
By boat or ferry from Cancun to Havana Despite their near proximity, there is presently no (legal) ferry or boat service between Cancun and Havana. The only way to reach Cuba's capital city is by air, bus, or car.
By boat from Cancun to New Orleans? No, there isn't even a dock in Cancun: There are no ferries between Mexico and the United States. If you can fly on a Wednesday, AirTran will cost you about 280 USD. 2.5 hours later you'll be in Atlanta.
The best way to get from New Orleans to Cancun is by flying. You could take an intra-US flight with Delta or American, or an international flight with JetBlue or Southwest. All of these flights require a passport, but they're all pretty easy to obtain. The fastest way might be to book a flight that stops in Atlanta or Houston -- both are around five hours from New Orleans. From there you could change planes or drive if you have enough time and want to save some money.
A car ferry would be your next option. There are two main companies that run ferries between Louisiana and Mississippi: Calcasieu Pass Transportation Authority and Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Corporation. Both offer daily service between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., and each costs about 35 USD one-way. You could also check with cruise line passengers, as many people travel with them between Florida and Louisiana/Mississippi every year. A rough estimate says these passengers spend around 200-300 USD per person.
There is no ferry service to or from Miami or Florida. There is a ferry that connects Santo Domingo to Puerto Rico. Hmmmmmm!
We strongly advise renting a car in Cancun so that you may travel the Yucatan Peninsula at your own leisure and see everything it has to offer. Driving was safe and simple for us, and we definitely suggest renting a vehicle in Cancun.
There are many factors to consider when deciding if it's worth renting a car in Cancun. The main thing is how much time you have before your flight and what areas you would like to visit. If you have only a few days then perhaps opt for a guided tour or activity. But if you have a whole week or more then you can decide what to do with your free time.
Renting a car in Cancun gives you freedom to go anywhere you want to go. You can visit all the famous sites such as Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Cobá but also less-known places if they interest you. There are plenty of small towns and villages across the peninsula so feel free to stop in wherever takes your fancy!
You will need to pay an insurance fee when you rent a car in Mexico but this is only when you cause damage to the vehicle while being driven by someone else. If you drive carefully then this should not be a problem.
